Thanks to the generosity of our Hancock Church Family, we provided backpacks for 40 Children (2-3 years old ), and 25 for Pre-school Children, and supported the Event on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at Widmeyer Park. 506 families were supported by this event from the tri-state area.

In August 2021, Hancock’s Helping Hands provided backpacks filled with school supplies to over 700 children and youth. The personal care bags and household bags touch the lives of people: in Hancock; Berkeley Springs, and Warfordsburg/Needmore. Thank You!

About Merle and John Keefer and the Scholarship

The Keefer Scholarship is usually given annually to high school seniors in each of the Tri-State high schools who will be continuing their education.  It has been made available through the generosity of a faith commitment of John and Merle Keefer and the Hancock Presbyterian Church (USA).  Hancock Church set aside a tithe of the monies bequeathed to them in 1999 by John Keefer to establish a Scholarship Fund.

John and Merle Keefer had no children of their own, but had the heart, mind and faith commitment to do well for the children of the Tri-State community.  Merle Keefer was a fifth grade teacher at Hancock Elementary School.  She was a member St. Thomas Episcopal Church and served as Organist and a Sunday School Teacher.  She was active in the community library, and a member of the Hancock Historical Society.  John Keefer was a life-long member and elder of Hancock Presbyterian Church.  He was an employee of the former People's Bank, now F&M Bank, and a talented investor.  His investments have made possible these gifts to the students of the Tri-State Community: Hancock, Berkeley Springs, and Southern Fulton High Schools.
